The UN Secretary General's Advisory Group on Energy and Climate Change (AGECC) report on "Energy for a Sustainable Future" published in April 2010 calls on the United Nations system and its Member States to commit themselves to two complementary goals: Ensure universal access to modern energy services by 2030 and Reduce global energy intensity by 40 per cent by 2030. AGECC recommends the following actions toward achieving these two goals.
These goals and recommended actions indicate the future course of global support in the energy sector.
- a global campaign should be launched in support of "Energy for Sustainable Development"
- Finance, including innovative financial mechanisms and climate finance, should be made available by the international community,
- Private-sector participation in achieving the goals should be emphasized and encouraged, and
- the United Nations system should make "Energy for Sustainable Development" a major institutional priority.
These goals and recommended actions indicate the future course of global support in the energy sector.
